I just came across an article the other day which I found very interesting, it's about 10 things Americans can't live without nowadays. I don't know if people in KK share the same addiction but truly these are the trend of a digital age.
1. Portable Computers (Yea). Mine will be with me whenever I travel away from home, well that's because I don't have a smart phone!!!
2. High-speed Internet Access (Yea). Once you start using high-speed internet, you are hooked, you can't go back (to dial-up). Everyone knows that the Americans are on survival mode now, but internet access will be the last thing for one to give up.
3. Smart Phones (Nay). Of course it's nice to have a cool phone, but unless you need to check your emails 24/7 (because of work maybe), opt this out.
4. Education (Yea). Though not all the Americans go to college (university), they want their children to be.
5. Movies (Yea). That's why people called Hollywood the dream makers
, and they can still survive in this tough economy! Young and old loves movies here, it may sound expensive to pay US$50 admissions for a family of 4, but people see this as the most affordable pleasure they could enjoy with their loved ones. Tip : Tickets are half price for the morning shows on weekends (that's what we usually do).
6.TV (YEA)! I don't know how could I survive without TV. Watching news and weather is a must every morning (sometimes it makes me go to work late), and the cold winter nights would be so boring without Dancing with the Star and American Idol. Lol.
7.Music Downloads (Nay). I can do without this.
8.Pets (Yea). Not for me, of course, I'm afraid of cats and dogs. Well, the education here teaches the children to love animals, so everyone here has a heart for pets no matter what. There's no such thing as having your dog as door-watcher, not to talk about selling 'Sam-Luk' illegally (people who eats 'Sam-Luk' here will be persecuted I am sure). We have big supermarkets here selling only pets stuff, from food to clothing to toys, you'll be surprised. People loves their dogs and cats like their children, they called themselves dad and mom to them, they bath them, they cloth them, they groom them, they kiss them... Ohhh! Sometimes you just hope they could adopt an orphan from Africa.
9.Beer & Wine (Nay). Many of them I know do not drink.
10.Coffee (100% yes). Me no crazy on coffee, luckily. If you work in midtown, holding a Starbucks on your way to work seemed a must (show of status). Other parts of the city, from Dunkin Donuts to McDonalds, from Seven Eleven to Chinese bakery, every food chain wants to grab a fair share of the ever rising coffee market.
